Jais Nielsen (1885–1961) was a Danish painter and ceramicist and a central figure in the Danish breakthrough of modernism. During his stay in Paris 1911–1914 he encountered Cubism, which became a decisive inspiration for his painting. He developed a distinctive Cubist idiom with angular lines, simplified forms, shallow pictorial depth and fragmentation of the motif, as also seen in the present work
